The requirement of extra equipment varies from one service provider to the other. Some service providers will ask you for nothing more than a DSL or a cable internet connection, a desktop microphone or a headset combo. However, some other VoIP service providers might ask you to have a special phone adapter to connect the high-speed internet modem and the existing telephone with each other. This set up takes only a couple of minutes before you are ready to use your regular telephone system as a VoIP phone.
