VoIP generally works by converting the analog voice signals, which are picked by the microphone, into digital data (mainly represented through numbers). The computer can easily recognize these signals and other attached electronic devices. This digital data is then compressed into IP packets that can be easily transmitted to different computers over the internet.
When these IP packets reach the other end, they are subjected to a reversal process, which converts them back into analog signals.
